I joined my very first BOM when Jenni at In Color Order launched her HST Block of the Month Quilt a Long in January 2012, and it has taken me almost exactly two years to put the whole quilt together.
I am delighted, however, to finally be able to post that this quilt is finished!
It could have been finished a couple of weeks ago but my husband was using it to keep warm whilst staying up all night to watch the Ashes Test Cricket on TV. I had to sneak it away in between Test Matches to work on it, and only just managed to finish the binding last night before the first day of the Final Test Match :) Sadly, the cricket has not been as heartwarming as the quilt, well not if you are an England supporter that is!
I used the maroon/gold spot fabric in the blocks for the binding, which meant that the only fabrics that I actually bought for this quilt was the marbled brown for the sashing and borders. As I have resolved to try and use up more of my stash in 2014, I am hoping that this will prove to be an auspicious start :)
This quilt has been on nearly all of my Quarter FAL lists for 2013, so I am doubly delighted to have finished it in time for inclusion in the Q4 FAL too. I have another two BOM quilts to complete and will be adding them to my list for the first quarter of 2014 in the hope that it will spur me on to get them all done and dusted.
I have enjoyed making this quilt and have definitely learnt a lot from the BOM, but I think I will be giving BOM's a rest for a while, once the others are finished. I am not really sure that the sampler style of these quilts is me. In 2014, there will be a wedding, a Diamond Wedding Anniversary, a retirement and a New Baby in our family, so there are plenty of opportunities coming up to try out new patterns and quilt styles.
Fiona, it is lovely! The colors really pop!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt! The blocks are so pretty and very interesting to look at! I also like the dresden sunflower quilt you made. Those dresden blocks are tricky but yours look perfect :)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on a gorgeous first finish for 2014!! Heres to lots of stash making this year!!
ReplyDelete2 years? Well one doesn't like to rush things... :oD Glad to hear it's passed the 'snuggle on the sofa' test already too!
ReplyDeleteA beautiful finish and it must be quite satisfying to you to have it finished!! Happy New Year Fiona!!!
ReplyDeleteWell done! Some things are worth waiting for and by the sounds of it, it is already in use.
ReplyDeleteVery pretty! I don't think that sampler quilts are very 'me' either, I think that if I wanted to 'sample' a block I'd rather turn it into a cushion or something.
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome--completed after two years! What an accomplishment, and way to go!
ReplyDeletewoohooo for a bom finish! :) (autocorrect wanted to make that a bon finish which I suppose is correct too if you're french...)
ReplyDeleteFiona, lovely quilt, another you can cross of that list of yours. How many UFOs have you started the year with?
ReplyDeletethe cricket has been very depressing (said from someone who is married to an Aussie - it has been very painful!) Such a gorgeous finish. I started a BOM last year - and got no furher than January!!
ReplyDeletegood quilt, both the block designs and the colours are eye catching. Re the cricket, we could not be doing worse, I go to bed but have it on the radio and listen between dozing.Think it will all be over tomorrow and best forgotten
ReplyDeleteCongrats on a lovely finish! Love HSTs possibilities.
ReplyDeleteLOVE, LOVE the colours in this quilt!!! If I watched the cricket I might make some witty comment about who's winning.
ReplyDeleteI am Australian, but I'm glad I don't follow cricket, because I definitely don't need my heart or any other part of me to get any warmer at the moment! It has been so hot here.
ReplyDeleteFantastic finish! I bet it feels so good to finish this quilt :D. You did such a beautiful job. Your sashing and borders tie everything together so well! Congratulations on using mostly stash fabrics too!
ReplyDeleteYou know a quilt is going to be well love and well used when you have to "steal" it away to finish it. It turned out great and I love the colors you used for it.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful finish! I love the warm colors you used. I love it when a quilt gets claimed before you even finish it. You know it is going to be well loved.
ReplyDeleteWhat are you talking about? The Ashes test cricket was excellent! I'm glad your husband could take comfort under a lovely quilt whilst enduring it.
