To infinity and beyond!

March is the first month for the Fat Stash Brit Bee and our Queen Bee this month is Svea who has asked us to make blocks with a space theme for a quilt she is planning for her son.

Although I have three boys there is very little in the way of space-themed fabric in my stash. (For very little read none!) So, when I discovered a FQ of this space themed fabric in a fabric shop in York, well naturally I couldn't resist.

The stars and rocket fabrics were sent by Svea and the centre fabric is my lucky purchase. I am hoping that the glittery dots and silver/grey mottle will pass muster for space :)

Svea asked for one block but I really wanted to try out this raw-edged applique rocket too, as it may be a long time before I get the chance again!

So, these are all ready to be posted tomorrow and I can tick another box on my very long to-do list.

Next month it is my turn to be Queen Bee and I am still dithering about what to ask for! So many great blocks, so hard to decide :)

And Sew Finished!

Finally, the And Sew On BOM wallhanging is finished.

I chose to make 8 of the 9 blocks so that I could have a tall, thin wallhanging and it has definitely worked.

As this was very much a sampler quilt I took the opportunity to use it to practise my free-motion quilting, using a different pattern in each block. I have already subjected you to most of the quilting patterns I used so won't bore you again other than to show off one pattern that hasn't been posted before.

I got very carried away with myself at one stage and decided to have a go at quilting some flowers! As this is my first attempt please don't look too closely :) It is, however, recognisably a flower, which is more than can be said for some of the other attempts it is fair to say. Still that definitely counts as progress in my book!

The quilt is sashed with Sew Retro Pattern fabric and just in case anyone misses the sewing connection it is bound with Sew Retro Cotton Reels, both by Makower. I added a hanging sleeve at the back when attaching the binding, so now have something else waiting for my other half to put up!

I am thrilled to bits to have this finally finished and must thank Kristy for such a great BOM, and apologise to her too for taking so long to finish!

This is also another finish for Q1 of the FAL, so even more reason to celebrate

Who knew?

What do you do when you have finished your book on a flight and don't really want to start another one straight away? Perhaps like me you turn to the in-flight magazine for some light reading. Now, if you were on a flight with Jet2.com in the last few weeks you might have been surprised to learn that

the Guinness World Record for flip-flop throwing is 33m!

In addition, whilst I already knew that flip-flops are called thongs in Australia, (which confused me completely the first time I saw a sign at a restaurant saying "no thongs allowed") and I have also heard them referred to as slides, I have never come across them being called jandals, go-aheads, slappies or step-ins, have you?

Then I learned that

 

Maderia wine was used to toast the first American Independence Day on July 4th, 1776. I wonder what they did with the glasses? I am guessing that they didn't feature in a current Italian trend, the rage room. 

Never come across a rage room before? Well, it sounds like a toddler tantrum for adults. Apparently to an appropriate soundtrack you can vent your frustrations on an array of glasses, crockery and furniture and walk away from the resulting mess at the end without a backward glance. In two minutes it is supposedly possible to smash 100 glasses and bottles! Something to think about next time your sewing machine snarls up threads or jams :)
